Rochester Prevails Against the Unjust BID

ROC DSA’s No BID Working Group celebrates a successful campaign as the Partnership for Downtown Rochester and Rochester Downtown Development Corporation have ended their push for a Business Improvement District (“BID”)!

BIDs are undemocratic and unjust, and have no place in our city. We are proud of all the organizing that has earned us this victory, with collaboration between everyone from DSA comrades to local artists, downtown residents and community activists, and more.

This victory was only possible through working class organizing, and the numerous phone calls and emails, signed petitions, community events, and Speak to Council sessions putting pressure on our elected officials to listen to the people of Rochester.

Thank you to Councilmembers Martin, Lupien, Smith, and Lightfoot for listening to us and standing up in opposition to the BID. Thank you to everyone who volunteered and stood in solidarity – everyone involved deserves credit for this achievement!

While Rochesterians have won the battle by stopping the BID, the war against privatization, gentrification, and over-policing is far from over. Rochester should not be run by wealthy property owners and they certainly haven’t given up on their goal of control of downtown. ROC DSA is committed to continuing this fight and we urge you to join us.

In Solidarity,
