Rochester Contemporary Art Center (RoCo) presents Sanctuary: Borders & Belonging in 2026, an exhibition bringing together national and regional artists, creatives, and documentarians in response to the current political and social landscape surrounding immigration. On view October 2 through November 14, 2026, the exhibition centers the human lives behind political rhetoric, examining how belonging is made and denied, and how care, resilience, and solidarity persist amid increasingly hostile systems and cruel public narratives.

Under the yoke of capital, many among us struggle to see a way out. We become disaffected, believing this to be our only place in life, or we lash out at our comrades, blaming ourselves for being unable to solve the problems which we confront. Indeed our struggle feels, at times, insurmountable. We fight against a globe-spanning hegemony of a system, and many who have come before us have seemingly failed in doing exactly that which we seek to do now. How do we hold hope in a situation like this?

The fall is the time to put your garden to bed for the winter. Global warming has not yet ended the cold months in Rochester, and farmer almanacs predict an especially cold winter. Sadly, too many gardeners believe that the best way for their garden to go into the winter is naked, so they clean off all crop residues and even till the soil one last time. Leaving your garden bare is about as good for your soil as spending the winter sleeping outside on the street naked would be for your health.
